| NMFC | Description | Class |

| 18490.00 | Cylinders, steel, propane or butane gas system, other than coppered or nickeled, mounted on steel racks, including necessary valves, regulators, tubing and fittings | 92.5 |
How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Use this NMFC when shipping empty, depressurized steel propane or butane cylinder fuel systems mounted on steel racks; note valves, regulators, tubing and fittings are included.
- Cap each valve, plug tubing ends, and band the cylinders to the rack, then band the rack to a skid; block and brace to stop roll or sway. Example: two rack assemblies strapped to a 48×40 pallet.
- Record footprint and overall height for quotes and dock handling; density isn’t needed for classing, but dimensions ensure LTL compatibility and avoid oversize fees.
- On the BOL, state “NMFC 18490 – Class 92.5 – Nonhazardous” and request no top-load; add corner boards to shield regulators, gauges, and manifolds during transit.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Fixed Class 92.5 simplifies rating and prevents reclass/reweigh disputes, cutting surprise charges.
- Nonhazardous status for empty systems broadens carrier choices and avoids hazmat surcharges.
- Steel rack mounting lowers damage risk, reducing claims and keeping automotive upfits and fleet installs on schedule.
- Clear NMFC mapping speeds carrier acceptance and bid pricing, improving rate predictability for LTL lanes.
