How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Bundle iron extension braces by uniform length; add wood dunnage and edge protectors, then band tightly and strap to a 48x40 pallet to prevent bending.
- Cap or wrap threaded ends and connection points to avoid abrasion during LTL handling; mark longest piece length on the pallet.
- List “Excavation Braces, extension, iron — NMFC 184430, Class 65” on the BOL; density entry not required for this item.
- For loose-length shipments, use skids with 4-way entry and block the load with chocks; request “Do Not Top Load” when stacking risk exists.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Fixed Class 65 simplifies quoting and reduces reclass disputes, keeping accessorial surprises off your invoice.
- Non-hazardous iron parts open more carrier options and faster tendering, shortening lead time to the jobsite.
- Proper bundling on standard pallets cuts handling fees and damage claims, protecting project schedules.
- Lower class versus many hardware items can trim LTL rates across regional and long-haul lanes.
