How to Determine Your Class

To find the correct freight class for your shipment:

  1. Pack mallets heads-to-toe with corrugated dividers in double‑wall cartons; fill voids to stop movement. Example: 10–12 mallets per 24×16×12 box.
  2. If using bags, choose heavy-duty woven sacks, then overpack in a master carton or unitize on a pallet with slip sheets to prevent scuffing of wood heads.
  3. Palletize cartons with no overhang; add corner boards, two horizontal straps, and 4–5 wraps of stretch film. Keep off damp floors to protect wooden parts.
  4. On the BOL, list: “Mallets, wooden – NMFC 185150 – Class 85.” Add “Do Not Wet” to reduce moisture exposure during cross-dock transfers.

Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.

Business Value

  • Predictable rating: fixed Class 85 means no density workups, accelerating quotes and TMS routing for tool shipments.
  • Non-hazardous status avoids special handling fees and simplifies carrier acceptance, keeping accessorial risks lower.
  • Boxed/bagged packaging improves stackability and cube use, reducing damage and claims while helping secure better LTL rates.
  • Named tools grouping minimizes reclass disputes and inspection delays, protecting margins and delivery timelines.
