How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Protect the finish and glass: wrap painted surfaces with foam, add corner guards, and pad window openings. If possible, remove loose trim and bag hardware.
- Stabilize on a pallet or in a light crate: stand doors upright with soft straps and blocking. Use double-wall corrugated or a wood frame to prevent bending.
- Mark paperwork clearly: list “NMFC 18520 – Exterior Doors, NOI (see item 18262)” on the BOL, note non-hazmat status, and include piece count and packaging type.
- Measure including hinges, handles, and latch protrusions. For multiple doors or tailgates, separate layers with honeycomb board and cap with a rigid top sheet.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Accurate NMFC usage reduces reclass fees and surprise adjustments, improving quote-to-invoice accuracy on auto body panels.
- Damage mitigation from proper crating and edge protection lowers claim risk and expensive repaint or refinish costs.
- Unit cost drops when pairing two doors or a door plus tailgate on one pallet, helping hit better LTL rate breaks.
- Clear labeling and orientation instructions speed cross-dock handling, helping meet collision shop and dealer deadlines.
