How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- State NMFC 185390 and Class 85 on the BOL and labels so carriers price correctly for aluminum pallets used with brick or concrete block.
- Bundle packaged shipments by nesting pallets flat, adding corner guards, and poly-banding 4–6 units; overwrap with stretch film to stop chafing.
- For loose items, block and brace with non-abrasive dunnage and load bars; avoid sharp steel contact that can gouge aluminum surfaces.
- Share accurate piece counts and stack heights with the carrier; request non-stack service if bundles exceed safe stacking limits in masonry or precast operations.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Predictable spend: fixed Class 85 (not density-based) reduces reclass risk and surprise fees.
- Faster tendering: non-hazardous status and a defined NMFC streamline quotes and pickups for LTL networks.
- Lower claims: corrosion-resistant aluminum plus proper banding and edge protection minimizes transit damage for masonry yards and block plants.
- Operational flexibility: ships loose or packaged, letting distributors align dispatch with production runs and trailer utilization.
