Classification Details

NMFC Description Class
185400.00 Pallets, brick, cement or concrete block or concrete sewer pipe, iron or wood 65

How to Determine Your Class

To find the correct freight class for your shipment:

  1. Use this classification for empty specialty pallets made of iron or wood designed to carry brick, concrete block, or concrete sewer pipe—not for the masonry or pipe itself.
  2. Bundle properly: nest wood pallets where possible and band through crossmembers; for iron frames, use steel or heavy poly banding with corner guards. Keep stack height manageable (≈60 in) to prevent tipping.
  3. Identify the material on the BOL (e.g., “Iron masonry pallets” or “Wood sewer-pipe pallets”) and note bundle counts to avoid reclass into generic pallet or rack items.
  4. Control protrusions and edges: cap fork pockets and tabs, add edge protection, and block-and-brace stacks so metal parts won’t abrade adjacent freight in a van or on a flatbed.

Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.

Business Value

  • Predictable pricing at Class 65 reduces reclass charges and surprise adjustments for construction suppliers and yard operators.
  • Quicker carrier acceptance: a named NMFC for masonry/pipe pallets minimizes documentation questions and speeds dock processing.
  • Lower claim risk with correct bundling and edge protection, especially for iron frames shipped alongside finished goods.
  • Supports return loops: consolidate empty specialty pallets on regular LTL moves to cut repositioning costs and keep projects on schedule.
