How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Protect critical ends: cap splines and yokes, wrap balance weights, and use V‑blocks or foam to stop roll and bending.
- Choose rigid packaging: heavy-wall tubes with plastic end plugs or a wood crate; secure to a full-length pallet with two bands and two straps.
- Declare the true longest length and mark as long freight if over 96 inches; add “Do Not Stack” and lift points to avoid fork damage.
- When shipping multiple shafts, sleeve each in kraft or foam and bundle within one tube using spacers; label each piece for receiving.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Cuts damage claims by stabilizing long, slender parts and protecting precision-machined ends that affect balance.
- Prevents reclass and inspection delays with clear labeling, accurate lengths, and carrier-ready packaging.
- Controls accessorials by planning for long-freight thresholds and selecting carriers equipped for elongated auto parts.
- Speeds quoting and scheduling: non-hazardous status and standard packaging details enable faster LTL rate responses.
