How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- List NMFC 185450 and Class 70 on the BOL; density is not required. Include the count of planks and the collapsed length for accuracy.
- Bundle 2–5 planks with edge protectors and at least three steel bands; add corrugated sleeves and plastic end caps to prevent denting.
- Stage bundles on two or three wood runners to support the span, then label “Fork From Ends” and “Do Not Stack” to avoid bowing and crush damage.
- For single long pieces, secure in a cradle or V‑block, shrink‑wrap to the support, and pre‑book a carrier that accepts overlength freight.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Fixed Class 70 rating streamlines quoting and reduces reclass disputes—no density calculations or audits.
- Proper bundling and edge protection lower damage risk, cutting claim costs and delivery delays for installation crews.
- Clear BOL details and end‑fork handling notes speed dock moves, improving on‑time performance and reducing accessorials.
- Non‑hazardous status avoids hazmat fees, while shipping planks fully retracted helps minimize overlength surcharges.
