How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Use NMFC 185470 on the BOL for jack components—hydraulic, pneumatic, ratchet, or cantilever—then list Class 65; no density entry is required.
- Protect function-critical surfaces: cap ports on hydraulic parts, drain residual oil, bag seals and springs, and wrap ratchet teeth or cantilever arms with edge guards.
- Choose packaging by weight: double‑wall cartons for kits, crates for heavy castings or bars; line boxes with absorbent and plastic to control any film oil.
- Palletize for stability: block, band, and shrink‑wrap; keep small hardware in labeled polybags or totes so nothing goes OS&D during cross‑dock handling.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Predictable pricing with fixed Class 65 reduces reclass and dispute risk, keeping jack parts quotes consistent across carriers.
- No density rating needed, enabling faster TMS estimates and quicker spot quotes for maintenance kits and replacement components.
- Non‑hazardous status lowers compliance effort and minimizes leakage-related claims when ports are capped and absorbents are used.
- Optimized pack and pallet strategies consolidate small parts, cut handling time, and help reach better LTL rate breaks.
