How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Identify the item clearly on the BOL as “Patterns, metal or wooden, NOI, used” to align with NMFC 185520 and avoid misclassification.
- Box or crate each pattern: block and brace to stop shifting, cap dowels and fragile edges with foam, and wrap metal pieces (VCI or poly) to prevent abrasion or oil transfer.
- If heavy or irregular, place the package on a pallet, then band and stretch-wrap; add edge guards so strapping won’t mark wooden faces. Use “Do Not Stack” only when the package can’t bear top load.
- Record weight and dimensions after packing and add photos. This supports correct Class 85 rating and reduces inspection disputes or damage claims.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Fixed Class 85 simplifies quoting—no density calculation—reducing reclass fees and speeding rate comparisons.
- Properly naming used patterns under the Tools group prevents costly misrates as machinery, scrap, or miscellaneous hardware.
- Robust packaging protects delicate pattern faces and alignment features, minimizing claim risk and production delays for foundry jobs.
- Combining several small patterns into one well-braced package or palletized crate lowers handling costs and accessorial exposure.
