How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Use NMFC 185560 and declare Class 77.5 on the BOL for lineman's pole supports; this item is not density-based, so the class remains fixed.
- Bundle long supports with wood spacers and banding, then strap to an extended pallet (e.g., 48x96) with edge guards and end caps to prevent bent ends.
- For smaller brackets or fittings, box or crate by size and weight; bag loose bolts and label clearly to keep assemblies together during cross-dock handling.
- Prevent overhang and tip risk: keep center of gravity low, apply at least three straps to the skid, and request liftgate or forklift if delivering to a jobsite.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Fixed Class 77.5 enables predictable LTL quotes and budget control for utilities, co-ops, and line contractors.
- Correct bundling and protection minimize claims from bent hardware and scratched galvanized or aluminum surfaces.
- Palletized, secured bundles reduce handling time and avoid fees tied to loose lengths or rework at terminals.
- Accurate NMFC item usage prevents reclass and density disputes, cutting accessorials and keeping projects on schedule.
