How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Identify the screen media and form factor—wire cloth panels, polyurethane sections, or trommel segments—and list them as “Screens, coal, gravel or sand, NOI” under NMFC 185850, Class 85.
- Package flat on a sturdy pallet with edge protectors; interleave panels with cardboard or foam to prevent abrasion. Example: bundle 10 wire panels with plywood top/bottom and two steel straps.
- Crate oversized or framed screens to stop flexing and corner crush. Add blocking under the frame so forklifts don’t bow the panel during handling.
- Label each skid with NMFC 185850, Class 85, piece count, and “Non-Hazmat.” Note any sharp edges and apply corner guards to protect other freight.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Predictable pricing: fixed Class 85 simplifies quoting and reduces reclass risk across common packaging types.
- Lower damage rates by stabilizing thin panels and frames, cutting claims costs and avoiding costly downtime at quarries or sand plants.
- LTL-friendly: consolidate screen sets for multiple sites on shared skids, improving lane density and reducing per-unit freight spend.
- Cleaner paperwork: a single NMFC for coal/gravel/sand screens speeds TMS automation and accelerates approvals from carriers.
