How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Palletize packaged steps: band bundles of steel steps to a sturdy pallet, add edge protectors, and shrink wrap to prevent shifting or puncturing nearby freight.
- Declare clearly on the BOL: list NMFC 186150, Class 65, count of packages, and a plain description like “Steel Sign Post Climbing Steps—Packaged.” Keep sign posts or other steel on separate lines.
- Guard against moisture: apply light oil or use VCI paper or poly bagging inside cartons to deter rust during cross‑dock transfers and outdoor staging.
- Use package-friendly hardware kits: combine screws or brackets within the same package when supplied, but avoid mixing with loose raw steel that could change handling or cause reclassification.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Predictable LTL pricing at Class 65 helps utilities, DOT crews, and sign installers budget project freight with fewer surprises.
- Non-hazardous steel hardware streamlines compliance and reduces accessorial risk, accelerating pickup and delivery scheduling.
- Simple, non-density classification minimizes reweigh/reclass disputes and shortens quote-to-book time for repeat shipments.
- Durable packaged presentation lowers damage claims versus loose steel, protecting margins on field maintenance kits and replenishment orders.
