How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Select NMFC 186450 and Class 70 when booking LTL for layout templets; choose “packages” as the packaging type to match tariff wording.
- Pack flat and rigid: use chipboard between layers, add edge guards, then stretch‑wrap and band to a pallet to prevent warping or edge damage.
- Declare piece count and accurate weight even though density isn’t used; mark “Do Not Bend” and note the material (iron, steel, or wood) on labels.
- For metal templets, wrap to prevent oil transfer and corrosion; for wood patterns, use poly liners and desiccant if humidity is a concern.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Fixed Class 70 means predictable quotes and fewer reclass disputes—no density calculations required.
- Correct “packages” designation under the Tools group minimizes accessorials and compliance delays.
- Ability to bundle multiple patterns into one package improves handling and can unlock better rate tiers.
- Common commodity for carriers, supporting broad network acceptance and steadier transit times.
