How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Match pack to panel: use double‑wall cartons with foam rails for small fender sections, and wood crates with internal ribbing for full hoods or combined body sections.
- Isolate edges and mounting tabs with blocks and keep panels off the walls; mark Do Not Stack and Fragile. Class 300 applies regardless of density.
- On the BOL list NMFC 18650, Class 300, and a clear line item (e.g., “plastic auto hood, crated”) with piece count and outer dimensions for smooth carrier planning.
- Arrange proper handling: liftgate for residential body shops, long forks for wide crates, and pallet runners to guide forklifts and prevent panel punctures.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Reliable rating: fixed Class 300 eliminates density disputes and reduces reclass fees for plastic body panels.
- Lower claims: rigid bracing and edge protection curb scuffs, cracks, and warping on plastic and composite parts.
- Faster turns: accurate NMFC 18650 labeling speeds inspections and cross-dock routing, cutting terminal dwell time.
- Smarter spend: compact crate footprints help avoid oversize add‑ons and keep LTL linehaul costs predictable.
