Note 186994: NOTE-Provisions also apply on apparatus for telescopic action or on hardware or fittings for installation or for attaching aerial or antenna.
How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- State on the BOL: “Telescoped Tubular Construction – NMFC 186993, not lattice or framework,” to avoid misclassification and reclass fees.
- Nest sections fully, cap open ends, and band bundles with non-marring strapping; add slip sheets or felt between tubes to prevent abrasion in transit.
- Measure after telescoping and bundling; use corner boards and stretch wrap, then secure to a pallet or skid. Mark “Do Not Unnest” and “Lift From Ends.”
- Provide bundle count, longest nested length, and total weight to the carrier. Example: five telescoped handrail assemblies, 96 in. max length, banded to one pallet.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Class 55 rating helps lower LTL costs for dense, durable tubular assemblies compared with higher-class alternatives.
- Telescoping reduces cubic size, cutting dimensional weight and enabling better trailer utilization for multi-stop routes.
- Clear distinction from lattice/framework items minimizes inspection delays, reclasses, and surprise charges.
- Non-hazardous status broadens carrier options and supports faster tendering without special handling fees.
