How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Pre-bundle long tower legs or panels with steel strap and edge protectors; cap ends and keep bundle width under 48 in for LTL conveyors.
- Pack hardware kits—bolts, plates, ladders—into a small crate, then band the crate to the master skid; mark each bundle "Set 1 of 4" to maintain counts.
- Separate steel from wood with non-staining dunnage and moisture barrier wrap; use 4-way skids so forklifts can lift safely from any side.
- Declare true max length to avoid surprise accessorials; if pieces exceed 12 ft, book a carrier that accepts long freight or consider a flatbed.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Class 55 keeps base rates low for dense, sturdy tower parts, helping you secure competitive LTL quotes.
- Single NMFC for steel or wood KD components reduces reclass risk and shortens claim disputes.
- KD format cuts cube and avoids oversize fees, often enabling more pieces per skid and fewer shipments.
- Non-hazardous status streamlines paperwork and broadens carrier options, which improves transit selection and pricing.
