How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Reference on the BOL: “NMFC 187780 – Tubes, cyclone dust collector, cast iron, in packages – Class 50” and include package count and total weight.
- Package tubes to stop rolling and edge chipping: end caps, interleave with corrugated or foam, and enclose in a rigid carton or crate labeled as a single package.
- Protect machined faces: oil-wrap or VCI paper, cap ends, and add corner boards so bands don’t bruise the iron during LTL cross-dock handling.
- Class is fixed (no density needed), but still list outer dimensions for carrier space planning and note “Keep Dry” to limit flash rust on machined surfaces.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Predictable costs with a fixed Class 50—no density calculations or reclass risk for these cast-iron packages.
- Lower effective rates on heavy iron parts compared with higher classes, improving landed cost for OEMs and maintenance teams.
- Cleaner paperwork accelerates quotes and pickups; standardized packaging reduces handling time and damages.
- Non-hazardous status widens carrier options and simplifies routing across regional and national LTL networks.
