Note 188062: NOTE-Ribs exceeding 3 feet in length may be shipped in burlapped bundles.
How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Pack components straight in a rigid, double‑wall box with end caps or tip guards. Example: bundle 36 metal ribs with plastic end protectors, sleeve in corrugate, and place inside a snug master carton.
- Prevent bending by using a tube‑in‑box or corner stiffeners, and print Do Not Bend on two sides. Keep each piece shorter than the box to avoid end‑crush.
- Verify eligibility against the NMFC note (item 188062). Confirm the parts are umbrella ribs, rods, stretchers, or tubes and that they ship in boxes to maintain Class 85.
- Measure length precisely for carrier limits (e.g., 96 in thresholds). Choose carton sizes that minimize over‑length surcharges while allowing ample internal bracing.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Class 85 for boxed umbrella components delivers predictable rating, reducing reclass risk and surprise invoices.
- Conforming packaging (boxed, braced ends) lowers damage claims on long, slender parts and keeps handling fees down.
- Consolidating multiple small pieces into one reinforced carton can beat minimum charges while speeding dock processing.
- Non‑hazardous status broadens carrier options and shortens quote-to-book time for LTL moves.
