Classification Details

NMFC Description Class
188080.00 Umbrellas, beach, garden, lawn, market, patio, vehicle or farm implement, cloth and metal or wood, in packages:
188080.01 With one-piece poles or standards 100
188080.02 With sectional poles or standards, sections folded or separated 85

How to Determine Your Class

To find the correct freight class for your shipment:

  1. Confirm the correct subclass within Class 85–100 for your umbrellas and quote that class on the BOL; these are shipped as packages, not loose bundles.
  2. Cartonize the canopy and pole separately with end caps and corrugated sleeves; for tractor sunshades with steel brackets, bag and pad hardware so it doesn’t abrade the cloth.
  3. Palletize long cartons with zero overhang using V-blocks or cradles, soft webbing straps, and a protective top frame; document the actual longest length and aim to stay under common length thresholds to avoid surcharges.
  4. Do not combine bases or weighted stands under this item—ship those under their own NMFC. Label each packaged unit clearly and keep counts separate on the BOL.

Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.

Business Value

  • Using the umbrella-specific item and correct subclass reduces reclass fees and dispute risk when rating LTL shipments.
  • Proper end-capped cartons and padded hardware lower the chance of bent ribs, punctured fabric, and claim costs during cross-dock handling.
  • Shipping as packaged units streamlines quotes and tendering, and the non-hazardous status accelerates carrier acceptance with fewer restrictions.
  • Separating heavy bases and accessories improves pricing accuracy, helps avoid additional handling charges, and keeps accessorials under control.
