How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Confirm the product fits under Umbrellas, NOI and ship only in sturdy corrugated boxes; note whether they are compact, golf, or promotional styles and record units per carton.
- Protect tips and ribs: add tip guards or corrugated sleeves so ferrules don’t pierce neighboring items, and bag canopies to prevent scuffing; e.g., pack 24 folding umbrellas in a 275# burst box with dividers.
- Palletize for stability: keep cartons within the 40x48 pallet footprint, alternate layers, strap and stretch-wrap with corner boards, and avoid top-loading heavy freight to prevent bent shafts.
- Document clearly: list “Umbrellas, NOI – NMFC 188100” and the chosen class (100-400) on the BOL, include piece counts, and photograph the pack-out to streamline claims and inspections.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Accurate class selection within 100-400 minimizes reclass fees and keeps carrier billing predictable.
- Boxed presentation reduces puncture and bend damage, lowering claim rates and customer returns on seasonal umbrella shipments.
- Standardized cartons stack efficiently, improving pallet cube and decreasing cost per unit on LTL moves.
- Non-hazardous status broadens carrier options and speeds booking, helping you capture tight lead times and promotions.
