How to Determine Your Class

To find the correct freight class for your shipment:

  1. Palletize the cart with wheels chocked, handles secured, and hopper capped; apply two steel or heavy poly bands plus stretch wrap to prevent roll-out.
  2. Remove or fold long handles and fragile spreader linkages; pad with foam or corrugated edge protectors and place parts in a labeled accessories box strapped to the pallet.
  3. Lower the center of gravity by positioning the hopper downward or crating upright units with blocking and bracing; mark Do Not Stack if the hopper sits higher than the frame.
  4. Clean and empty the cart to remove fertilizer residue; line any parts box, seal it, and note Non-hazardous, equipment only on the BOL to avoid hazmat confusion.

Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.

Business Value

  • Precise NOI identification (non-lawn, hand carts) reduces reclass and inspection delays, keeping quotes aligned with invoiced charges.
  • Damage prevention through wheel restraint and hopper protection cuts claim risk and replacement costs during busy planting seasons.
  • Forklift-friendly pallets and consistent footprints speed dock turns and improve on-time LTL performance across multi-stop routes.
  • Right-sized packaging decreases cubic usage, improving rate negotiations and potentially lowering accessorials for limited access or rehandling.
