NMFC Description Class

Notes

Note 188972: NOTE-Capacity of body is to be determined by multiplying the maximum inside dimensions of height, length and width.

How to Determine Your Class

To find the correct freight class for your shipment:

  1. Verify the cart body capacity is 7.5 cu ft or less and that the body is 20-gauge steel or thicker; include a spec sheet or product cut sheet on the BOL to prove compliance with item 188970 and its note.
  2. Measure each KD-flat box to the nearest 0.5 inch and list length, width, and height per piece. Example: Frame box 46 x 24 x 6 in; hardware box 18 x 10 x 6 in.
  3. Pack steel edges to prevent carton punctures: use foam rails or honeycomb pads, bag loose hardware, and choose double-wall corrugated boxes. Seal with reinforced tape and add corner protection.
  4. For multi-piece shipments, palletize with no overhang, band and stretch wrap, and place ‘This Side Up’ and ‘KD-Flat’ labels. Keep cartons accessible for inspection to avoid reclass delays.

Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.

Business Value

  • Predictable Class 70 rating reduces reclass risk and keeps LTL quotes consistent across SKUs.
  • KD-flat boxed format improves cube utilization and lowers handling costs compared with assembled carts.
  • Non-hazardous designation expands carrier options and avoids hazmat fees or special paperwork.
  • Clear dimensional data speeds up carrier inspections and minimizes extra charges like OS&D claims or inspection fees.
