How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Print NMFC 189025 and Class 85 on the BOL with the description “steel coasting discs, nested, in packages” to prevent reclassification.
- Nest discs by diameter, place slip sheets between stacks to prevent scuffing, and band or stretch-wrap tightly. Add rim edge protectors and keep everything within the pallet footprint to avoid overhang.
- Label package counts and dimensions that matter to dock teams, such as stack height and disc diameter (e.g., “10 packages, 24 in discs, 40 per package”) for faster handling and accurate quotes.
- If shipping hardware or mixed materials with the discs, pack them separately or list as separate line items so the steel-disc classification remains clear.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Fixed Class 85 simplifies pricing and reduces surprise reclass fees and billing disputes.
- Nested packaging lowers cubic footprint, improving LTL rate eligibility and minimizing oversize or cube-based surcharges.
- Non-hazardous steel product streamlines carrier selection and speeds tender acceptance.
- Consistent packaging and labeling cut handling time, reduce damage risk, and accelerate dock turns.
