How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Specify if the unit is horse-drawn (wooden or steel tongue) or a towable trailer (pintle or ball coupler), and include overall length measured with the tongue.
- Secure the dump bed and tailgate: use rated chains and binders, install mechanical braces or bed locks, and pin latches so nothing shifts mid-transit.
- Choose the right open-deck: flatbed for standard heights, step-deck if sideboards or tall bed rails exceed legal height; add wheel chocks and four-point tie-downs per axle.
- Shrink the footprint where possible—remove sideboards or toolboxes, rotate/detach the tongue, and palletize loose hardware with labels to keep parts together.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Accurate NOI description prevents reclass/reweigh disputes and unexpected accessorial charges, keeping quoted freight rates stable.
- Optimized securement and minor disassembly can reduce required deck type or linear feet, lowering linehaul and minimum charges.
- Clear distinction between horse-drawn versus towable units guides carrier selection and appointment timing, reducing pickup delays.
- Non-hazardous status broadens carrier options and speeds tendering, improving transit times for farm and construction deliveries.
