How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Decide wheel-on vs. wheel-off before quoting; measure overall length with tongue/drawbar attached, and note any overhang once wheels are removed.
- Secure moving parts: pin or strap the tongue, chock wheels if rolling, and pad brake linkages, fenders, and hitches to prevent rub damage in LTL.
- Choose packaging by size: palletize small carts, crate mid-size wagons, or ship larger trailers on a step-deck or partial TL with blocking and bracing.
- Document condition with photos and list accessories (wheels boxed, tongues detached). Mark lift points and center of gravity to guide carriers.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Clear NOI description reduces reclass risk and dispute time across carriers when shipping unique carts and horse-drawn wagons.
- Optimized packaging (wheel-off, tongue removed) can shrink cube, enabling better LTL rates or volume quotes.
- Proper blocking, crating, and padding lower damage claims and keeps vintage or specialty equipment shipment-ready.
- Flexible handling guidance supports both LTL and partial truckload, improving capacity options and transit reliability.
