How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Reference NMFC 189360 and Note 188966 on the BOL; describe as “horse-drawn passenger vehicle, boxed/crated,” and include make/model or museum identifier.
- Engineer the crate: block and brace axles and hubs, pad body panels, bag loose hardware, and strap seats and lanterns; provide 4-way forklift entry and internal tie-down points.
- Record external crate dimensions and total weight per piece; long buggies may exceed 96 inches, so request long-freight handling and verify dock door clearances.
- Pre-arrange accessorials such as residential or farm pickup, liftgate, appointments, or limited-access delivery; attach photos so carriers can validate handling needs.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Correct commodity naming minimizes reclass risk and surprise fees, protecting your freight budget.
- Robust crating and bracing reduce damage on delicate coachwork, lowering claims and downtime for restorers and museums.
- Complete specs accelerate quote turnaround and tender acceptance, keeping project timelines on track for events and exhibitions.
- Non-hazardous, boxed/crated status expands carrier options and supports competitive LTL rates across lanes.
