How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Verify each unit weighs at least 5,000 lb and note Class 100 with NMFC 189380 on the BOL; attach a scale ticket when available.
- Book equipment that can actually lift and handle the weight (e.g., 10k lb forklift or crane). Example: a 7,500 lb aluminum-deck platform trailer needs a heavy-capacity lift at pickup.
- Specify securement: wheel chocks, blocking/bracing, and four-point chains or straps to rated tie-downs. Pad sharp edges to protect straps and deck surfaces.
- Describe clearly: “Platform trailer truck, non-self-propelled, 1 unit, ≥5,000 lb, Class 100, NMFC 189380.” Include overall length/width for routing even though density is not required.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Predictable pricing with a fixed Class 100 once the 5,000 lb threshold is met, reducing reclass risk and surprise charges.
- Faster quoting and tendering since density calculations are unnecessary for this weight-based item.
- Lower claims likelihood by specifying proper securement and handling instructions for heavy, single-piece units.
- Better mode decisions: compare LTL Class 100 against partial truckload for 5,000–12,000 lb units to balance cost and transit time.
