Note 189431: NOTE-Also applies on shopping carts that provide seating or amusement for small children.
How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Nest carts tightly (e.g., 8–12 per bundle), pad handles and child seats, then cross-band through the lower frame; lock or wrap casters to prevent rolling.
- Palletize bundles on 48x40 GMA pallets with no overhang; add top/bottom sheets and corner boards, and mark forklift entry points for safe handling.
- List on the BOL: “NMFC 189430 – Shopping Carts, packaged,” note units per bundle, material (wire or plastic), and reference Note, item 189431 in remarks.
- Plan accessorials for store deliveries: liftgate, appointment, and limited access. Use “Do Not Stack” labels if bundles lack top-cap protection.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Efficient nesting and banded packaging shrink cubic volume, improving LTL rates and reducing dimensional charges.
- Accurate NMFC citation (189430) with note reference minimizes reclass/rebill risks and speeds up carrier rating.
- Protective packaging (corner boards, sheets, caster immobilization) lowers damage claims on chrome or plastic finishes.
- Non-hazardous status broadens carrier options and simplifies compliance, keeping capacity flexible during retail rollouts.
