How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Protect runners and rails: wrap with foam or edge guards, add spacer blocks to keep runners off the pallet deck, then band lengthwise and crosswise to prevent racking in transit.
- Choose packaging by count: single sleds in sturdy corrugated cartons with internal blocking; multiple sleds nested nose-to-tail, padded between contact points, then stretch-wrap and strap to a 48x40 pallet.
- Account for curved noses: measure and list maximum length including the curl and any protruding handles so carriers can price accurately and avoid overlength fees.
- Label precisely: “Children’s sleds—wood/metal, not plastic,” include the NMFC ID and unit count, and use “Do Not Stack” cones for delicate wood slats during peak winter shipments.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Accurate NMFC usage minimizes reclass/reweigh charges and keeps LTL quotes aligned with final invoices.
- Damage prevention packaging reduces bent runners and scuffed wood, lowering claim rates and costly reships.
- Nesting and palletizing improve cube utilization, helping avoid oversize surcharges and trimming freight spend.
- Non-hazardous designation broadens carrier options and speeds tendering, critical during seasonal demand spikes.
