Note 189572: NOTE-Provisions for Parts, NOI, will also apply when each package contains a mixture of boat trailer parts.

How to Determine Your Class

To find the correct freight class for your shipment:

  1. Measure overall dimensions, including tongue length and guide-ons, and note folded length if a swing-away tongue is used. Accurate dims determine carrier acceptance and space planning.
  2. Immobilize the unit: chock wheels, use wheel nets or frame straps, and lock the coupler. Pad brake lines, lights, bunks, and rollers to prevent rub or crush damage.
  3. Select packaging to fit routing: ship assembled on skids or wheel cages, or nest compatible frames with solid blocking. Keep clearances and avoid metal-to-metal contact.
  4. State clearly on the BOL: “Trailers, boat carrying,” include material (steel or aluminum) and packaging method (assembled, nested, on skids), and confirm non-hazardous status.

Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.

Business Value

  • Avoids reclass disputes by using the precise NMFC entry when no fixed class is assigned, reducing unexpected fees.
  • Optimized packaging—nesting or folding tongues—cuts cubic footage and limits oversize accessorials for better LTL rates.
  • Better damage prevention through immobilization and padding lowers claims costs and keeps dealer and marina inventory moving.
  • Clear specs speed carrier approvals and pickups, improving cycle time during peak boating seasons and promotional launches.
