How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Confirm each unit weighs 5,000 lb or more and list NMFC 189600, Class 100 on the BOL. Include certified weight and note non-stackable status.
- Choose the right equipment for height and wheel spread. Many straddle trailers ride tall—use step-deck or lowboy if over 102 in height to avoid over-height charges.
- Prep hydraulics before pickup: retract lift arms, engage mechanical locks, cap and protect hose ends and manifolds, and shield the control box to prevent impact or oil seepage.
- Secure via the structural frame using rated chains or straps at four corners. Block wheels, chock as needed, and avoid tying down to hydraulic cylinders or lift components.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Class 100, weight-governed rating reduces density disputes, preventing costly reclass fees and billing delays.
- Clear eligibility (≥5,000 lb each) streamlines quoting across carriers, improving rate consistency for capital equipment moves.
- Proper equipment selection (step-deck/lowboy) avoids over-height or specialized handling surcharges, lowering total landed cost.
- Protecting hydraulic systems cuts damage claims and downtime, keeping mission-critical material handling assets in service sooner.
