How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Determine density: weigh the boxed trike, measure L x W x H, then compute PCF (e.g., 78 lb ÷ 10.5 cu ft = 7.4 PCF). Include all foam, hardware, and manuals in the weight.
- Protect the drivetrain and wheels: remove or immobilize accessories, cap axle ends, pad the chainring and fenders, and use double‑wall corrugated with corner guards to prevent punctures.
- Document precisely on the BOL: list “NMFC 189620 Adult Tricycles, NOI, Item 170, boxed” and show the calculated density and selected freight class to avoid carrier reclass.
- If palletizing the box, keep it flat, avoid overhang, and note “boxed on pallet” while using stretch wrap and two straps so the packaging still qualifies as boxed under Item 170.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Density-based rating lets you lower costs by boosting PCF—tighten packaging or reduce void space to reach a lower class and better LTL rates.
- Boxed format speeds handling versus crating, which can cut accessorials, shorten dwell times, and reduce labor at both dock and store locations.
- Accurate NMFC and Item 170 details help prevent inspections, reclasses, and surprise rebills—protecting margins on direct-to-consumer or dealer shipments.
- Non-hazardous classification broadens carrier options and lane flexibility, improving service reliability during peak retail or seasonal promotions.
