How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Reference NMFC 188500 at booking and lock in Class 150 for wagons, street sprinkling/washing units, or tank, NOI—no density needed.
- Prep tanks: fully drain, rinse, and cap all ports; remove hoses and spray bars. Note “tank, NOI” on the BOL to avoid hazmat flags.
- Stabilize non-self-propelled wagons: chock wheels, secure the tongue/steering, and rack or crate bulky frames. Example: block to a 48x96 skid with cross-bracing.
- Protect protrusions and gauges with padding and edge guards; band to a pallet or rack and mark center-of-gravity for safe forklift handling.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Predictable pricing with a fixed Class 150—no density calculation, fewer reclass fees, faster quotes.
- Proper racking/crating reduces damage risk on long, irregular pieces, cutting claims and downtime for municipalities, ranches, and restorers.
- Clean, capped tanks prevent carrier cleaning charges and avoid hazmat misclassification, keeping transit on schedule.
- Clear “non-self-propelled” documentation minimizes disputes and accessorials, improving carrier acceptance and on-time performance.
