How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Identify the correct subclass by reviewing related notes 190126 and 190128, then match your description (boxed or crated) to the class 100–150 range.
- If boxing or crating, use a rigid, weight-rated crate with wheel chocks, cross-bracing, and tie-downs. Remove or secure fluids per carrier policy and protect sensitive trim.
- Provide full dimensions and weight of the crate/box for accurate quoting and dock planning. Mark lift points, maintain forklift clearance, and add ‘Do Not Stack’ if needed.
- On the BOL, list year/make/model or VIN and describe the pack (e.g., “Automobile—crated, NMFC 190120”). Attach photos to speed carrier approval and claims handling.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Correct use of NMFC 190120 minimizes reclass and inspection fees, protecting margins on high-value vehicle shipments.
- Fixed classes (100–150) streamline rating and help compare LTL versus volume/partial truckload options with confidence.
- Engineered crating or reinforced boxing reduces damage risk, strengthening claim defensibility and carrier acceptance.
- Clear, non-hazardous classification and precise documentation shorten tender-to-pickup time and improve quote accuracy.
