How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Quote and book at Class 150 for complete passenger cars, ambulances, or hearses; note operable status, ground clearance, and VIN on the BOL—no density required.
- Prep the unit: fuel at or below 1/4 tank, battery disconnected, doors and hoods secured, loose medical gear removed, and any oxygen cylinders taken out of ambulances.
- Match equipment to the vehicle: enclosed auto hauler for high-value or specialty units, flatbed with winch for inoperable vehicles, or drive-on service at a car terminal; avoid liftgate requests.
- Plan securement: 4-point wheel straps with chocks, soft-tie anchor points, and foam wrap for mirrors, light bars, and roof hardware; provide keys or fob instructions.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Predictable rating: fixed Class 150 eliminates density disputes and cuts reclass fees.
- Faster quoting and dispatch for dealers, EMS fleets, and funeral homes due to simple, single-code classification.
- Lower accessorial costs by choosing the right equipment (no liftgate, proper winch) and preparing vehicles to reduce detention.
- Reduced claims risk with standardized securement and electrical system shutdown, minimizing damage and fire exposures.
