How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- State NMFC 190190 and Class 150 on the BOL, and list the VIN plus whether the tractor or driving truck is running, winch-load, or inoperable.
- Prep the unit: reduce fuel to about a quarter tank, disconnect batteries per carrier policy, cap lines, cover exhaust stacks, and remove loose accessories or tools.
- Plan securement like a vehicle: four-point tie-down with properly rated chains/straps, wheel chocks, and frame blocking if skidded or partially crated.
- Match equipment to the unit: step-deck with ramps or RGN for tall or inoperable tractors; if moving via LTL, confirm roll-on capability and provide exact dims and weight to avoid reweigh or cubic issues.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Predictable rating with fixed Class 150 eliminates density disputes and costly reclass fees.
- Single NOI code covers truck tractors and fire apparatus driving trucks, speeding up quoting and tendering.
- Non-hazardous status reduces documentation and lowers the chance of hazmat-related surcharges or delays.
- Proper vehicle-style securement and prep minimize damage claims and accessorials (clean-ups, extra handling), improving total landed cost.
