How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Print the BOL to read: “NMFC 190280 – Half Tracks, Army – Class 100 – Non-Haz,” so carriers rate it correctly without density.
- Box all loose gear (tools, optics, ramps) and secure the boxes inside the vehicle; lock or tether mounted guns and confirm no ammo ships with the unit.
- Prep the vehicle per carrier policy: drain or reduce fuel, disconnect batteries, cap lines, and verify any add-ons are within overall dimensions.
- Plan loading like heavy equipment: use ramps or a winch, chock tracks, chain to rated tie-downs, and protect decks with dunnage to prevent track damage.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Fixed Class 100 eliminates density calculations, reducing reclass disputes and surprise rebills.
- Non-hazardous status broadens carrier options and avoids hazmat surcharges for faster tendering.
- Allows boxed accessories to ship inside the vehicle, cutting extra handling lines and accessory shipments.
- Consistent rating for surplus, museum, or training units streamlines multi-stop projects and bid pricing.
