How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Note NMFC 190400 and Class 150 on the BOL, and specify “self-propelling snow plow” so carriers rate it correctly and avoid reclass charges.
- Prepare the unit for transport: lower and pin the blade, pad the cutting edge, cap hydraulic quick-couplers, disconnect the battery, and keep fuel under 1/4 tank.
- Secure like rolling equipment—chock wheels and use four-point frame tie-downs. Avoid routing straps over hydraulic hoses or control linkages; protect contact points.
- Measure with the blade position you’ll ship: overall length, height, and maximum blade width. If removing the blade narrows the profile, list both dimensions for accurate quotes.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Predictable pricing with fixed Class 150 reduces reclass disputes and surprise rebills on LTL lanes.
- Faster quoting and tendering since density and packaging do not change the class for these powered units.
- Lower claim risk by stabilizing the blade and protecting hydraulics—fewer service interruptions and repair costs during peak winter demand.
- Smarter mode decisions: compare LTL vs partial truckload for oversized widths; choosing the right equipment can trim accessorials and transit time.
