How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Pack clips, couplings, and staples in sturdy corrugated boxes with dividers or small-parts bins; bag bundles to contain loose pieces and add VCI or light oil if steel is rust-prone.
- Blunt sharp edges: cap U-shaped staples, use chipboard sleeves, and add inside liners so hardware doesn’t punch through the carton during LTL handling.
- Sort by part number and size, then label cartons with counts and “Metal Vehicle Parts — Boxed, Class 70” to speed carrier intake and reduce rating disputes.
- Keep cartons under 40–50 lb for hand-load lanes; for heavier sets use double-wall boxes on pallets, band and wrap tightly, and avoid loose fill that shifts.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Predictable quotes with fixed Class 70 (non-density), simplifying rate shopping and tendering across LTL carriers.
- Lower risk of reclass and surprise fees by using NMFC-compliant boxed packaging for small metal hardware.
- Stackable, right-sized cartons improve trailer cube and reduce per-shipment handling time, cutting accessorial exposure.
- Damage and claim reduction from edge protection and internal containment leads to fewer reships and lower total landed cost.
