How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Confirm the parts fit this item: steel dashboards, rocker panels, cowl tops, hinge pillars, floor and rear compartment pans, roof skins, wheelhouses, and quarter panel assemblies (with or without wheelhouses).
- Protect broad, thin panels from flex: cap sharp edges, add foam corners, use VCI or kraft wrap, and band to a blocked skid. Example: nest two quarter panels, wrap, then strap to a 48x96 pallet with edge protectors.
- Use rigid fixtures when possible: returnable racks or framed crates prevent oil-canning and dings. Mark Do Not Double Stack for contoured roofs or quarter assemblies and place load bars to keep faces off trailer walls.
- Document precisely on the BOL: list NMFC 19097 and reference Note item 18262, include piece count, left/right designation, and model/year. Measure the largest envelope (including flanges and wheelhouse lips) for accurate quoting.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Cleaner rating and fewer disputes by citing NMFC 19097 and the related note, reducing reclass fees and audit time.
- Damage mitigation on high-surface-area steel saves claim costs; proper edge protection and rigid packing preserve paint-ready surfaces.
- Nesting broad panels and using racks improves trailer utilization, often cutting cube and lowering linehaul charges on multi-piece shipments.
- Non-hazardous designation broadens carrier options and speeds tendering, helping you hit tight body shop or OEM timelines.
