How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Note NMFC 191510, Class 175, and “Crated” on the BOL; call out the solid plywood-bottom crate for clean forklift handling.
- Secure the hinged access door with latches or tie-backs; pad metal hardware and fiberglass edges with foam or corrugated wrap.
- Bolt the cap to internal skids and verify all crate bolts are tight; add 2–4 steel or heavy poly straps around the wooden crate.
- Label Do Not Stack and show lift points/center of gravity; request longer forks if the crate matches pickup bed width.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Fixed Class 175 enables predictable rating and quotes—no density calculations, fewer reclass fees.
- Bolted wooden crate with solid plywood bottom lowers damage risk to fiberglass panels and hinges, cutting claims.
- Accurate NMFC pairing speeds carrier acceptance and reduces inspection delays at cross-docks.
- Non-hazardous status broadens carrier options, improving capacity access and transit reliability.
