How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- List NMFC 191290 and Class 100 on the BOL, and describe the item as a steel dumping tractor—note whether it includes the dumping device and if it ships loose or packaged.
- For loose shipments, secure the tractor to a heavy skid: block and brace, chock wheels, and chain through designated frame points. Pad sharp edges and latch the dump bed.
- For packaged moves, band the unit to a reinforced pallet or enclose in a crate with forklift clearance. Protect controls and hinges, and cap any exposed fittings on the dumping mechanism.
- Provide accurate overall dimensions and weight for handling, request liftgate or forklift as needed, and confirm non-hazmat status to streamline carrier selection and pickup.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Fixed Class 100 delivers predictable LTL quotes and reduces reclass and surprise charges.
- Flexible “loose or in packages” handling shortens prep time for dealers, auction houses, and fleet shops.
- Non-hazardous classification widens carrier options and cuts documentation overhead.
- Clear NMFC mapping speeds inspections and claims resolution, improving on-time performance and cost control.
