How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Use double‑wall cartons with foam or corrugated inserts to shield sealing faces on covers and locking/fastening rings; bag small hardware and mark the box with cover diameter and collar type.
- Palletize multiple boxes in a tight footprint (e.g., four 18" covers on a 48x40), add a plywood top sheet, and strap with PET banding to prevent bending of mounting collars during cross‑dock handling.
- Describe on the BOL as “Tank truck/trailer manhole parts, boxed” and list piece count and components (covers, collars, locking rings) to avoid misclassification with concrete manholes or hazardous fuel system items.
- If shipping with gaskets, vents, or flame arrestors, pack them separately from metal covers to prevent compression damage and include orientation or torque notes for receiving maintenance crews.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Protecting machined sealing surfaces cuts claim risk and field rework for fuel haulers and tank‑wash facilities.
- Non‑hazardous parts avoid hazmat fees and carrier restrictions, expanding options and lowering LTL rates.
- Clear NMFC reference minimizes reclass bills and inspection delays, speeding terminal throughput and delivery ETAs.
- Boxed, pallet‑friendly cartons improve cubic efficiency, enabling better consolidation and cost‑per‑unit shipped.
