Notes
Note 192992: NOTE-Also applies on enclosures for permanent or temporary conversion of open bodies to closed bodies with or without sleeping bunks, pads or mattresses.
How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Identify the item as a soft top (fabric/vinyl) or hard top (plastic/fiberglass) and cite “Tops, NOI — see Note 192992” on the BOL and paperwork.
- Package to the build: fold and bag soft tops, then double‑wall carton with edge guards; crate hard tops with foam blocking, corner braces, and strap to a pallet to prevent panel flex.
- Separate and bag hardware, frames, or windows; label orientation (This Side Up) and add Do Not Stack cones for glazed or painted surfaces.
- Record outside dimensions and photos of the packed unit; keep Note 192992 reference handy to avoid density-based assumptions and unwanted reclass.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Improves rating consistency by referencing the specific NOI note, helping prevent arbitrary reclass and surprise charges.
- Cuts claims and refurb costs by tailoring packaging—cartons for soft tops, rigid crating for hard tops with scratch and glass protection.
- Speeds dock handling since the freight is non-hazardous and palletized or crated, reducing delays and accessorials.
- Enhances quote accuracy and compliance when the BOL uses the correct description and note callout, minimizing inspections and holds.
