How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Apply NMFC 193000 when shipping bundled aluminum or steel truck/trailer body tops with adjustable shutters or louvers; list bundle count and overall length on the BOL to aid carrier planning.
- Lock shutters/louvers closed and band securely; place edge protectors under metal strapping and use wood skids or dunnage to create forklift clearance and prevent blade damage.
- For long roof sections, book carriers that accept overlength freight; load lengthwise and block/braced to limit flexing and vibration during linehaul.
- If louvers protrude, mark Do Not Stack and add corner boards and protective film between layers to prevent metal-on-metal abrasion.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Fixed Class 125 removes density calculations, speeding quotes and reducing reclass risk.
- Bundled packaging reduces handling touches and claim probability on delicate louvers, lowering total landed cost.
- Using NMFC 193000 on paperwork helps avoid W&I reweigh/reclass fees and delivery delays.
- Accurate length notes let you compare van, flatbed, or volume LTL options for the best rate on oversized tops.
