How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Confirm the commodity fits the scope: bicycle components, hitches/couplers, freight trailer parts, and lift truck attachments—not whole vehicles or engines with fluids.
- Pick packaging by part type: double‑wall boxes with dividers for small hardware; wood crates for heavy or irregular attachments. Pad sharp edges and follow Item 170 standards.
- Calculate density after packing: measure outside L×W×H in inches, convert to cubic feet (÷1728), then weight ÷ cubic feet = PCF. Example: 180 lb in 8.0 cu ft = 22.5 PCF.
- State it cleanly on the BOL: “NMFC 193100 Vehicle Parts, NOI, boxed/crated, density 22.5 PCF,” include piece count and palletization to ensure the correct density class is applied.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Optimize density to target a lower freight class, directly reducing LTL base rates on boxed or crated parts.
- Item 170‑compliant boxes/crates curb reclass inspections and damage claims, lowering avoidable fees and delays.
- Clear labeling (NMFC, packaging, PCF) speeds terminal handling and minimizes OS&D, improving on‑time performance.
- Non‑haz category broadens carrier options and avoids hazmat surcharges, simplifying quotes and procurement.
