How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Pack each ventilator in a rigid box or wood crate with corner blocking to prevent concrete chipping and protect the wire mesh face.
- Palletize boxes or crates with tight stretch-wrap and two straps per axis; keep mesh-facing sides toward the center of the pallet to avoid snags.
- Mark orientation and handling notes: “Concrete Ventilator,” “Wire Mesh Screened,” and “Do Not Stack on Mesh Side” to guide dock crews.
- When quoting or tendering, specify Class 65 and packaging type (box or crate) to avoid density reclass and speed up carrier acceptance.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Fixed Class 65 simplifies rating and reduces reclass fees compared to density-based items.
- Durable masonry construction plus proper crating lowers damage risk and claim costs on LTL lanes.
- Clear packaging rules (boxes or crates) streamline compliance, helping avoid inspections and delays.
- Non-hazardous status broadens carrier options and supports more competitive freight rates.
