How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Pack each unit in a rigid carton with end caps or foam-in-place; add rod guards and poly bags to contain residual oil and prevent scuffs.
- Keep them in packages even when palletized: box pairs, then master-carton or palletize the cartons with edge protectors; avoid loose, banded metal parts.
- Mark paperwork and cartons clearly: list NMFC 19500, Class 70 on the BOL, and apply orientation and pressure warnings if gas- or oil-charged; attach SDS if required.
- Check Note item 19501 and carrier rules before shipping returns or leaking units; many carriers reject non-packaged or damaged shocks.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Fixed Class 70 rating simplifies quoting and stops density reclasses, keeping rates predictable.
- Purposeful packaging cuts damage on long, rod-end components, reducing OS&D claims and service delays.
- Accurate hazardous handling and labels prevent inspections, re-bills, and transit holds, protecting timelines.
- Pairing two shocks or a strut set per carton optimizes cube without changing class, trimming per-unit freight cost.
