How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Specify the build: spring assemblies only or assemblies combined with seat/seat-back frames. Use clear invoice text like “Seat Spring Assemblies with Frames, non-haz, NMFC 19580.”
- Protect sharp wire ends and curved hooks with caps or foam. Band to a pallet or dedicated returnable rack; add corner boards to stop spring bowing and punctures.
- Record true outside dimensions including protruding tabs. Even though class is not density-based here, carriers need accurate cube and stackability notes.
- Pick sturdy packaging for the route: heavy corrugated crate for parcel hubs, or steel rack for OEM shuttles. Label each piece count and packaging type on the BOL.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Avoid reclass fees by clearly distinguishing assemblies versus assemblies-with-frames and listing NMFC 19580 on paperwork.
- Reduce damage claims by immobilizing flexible spring grids; maintained geometry prevents costly fitment issues at trim lines or upholstery shops.
- Reusable racks on repetitive lanes cut cube and touch points, improving dock handling speed and lowering accessorial risk.
- Consolidating multiple sets to a standard 48x40 footprint streamlines quotes, improves LTL rates, and minimizes minimum charge exposures.
